(OOC) CK’s Blog Banter #20: Griefing And Changing.

Welcome to the twentieth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves  an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the  realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said  topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive,  either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any  questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed to crazykinux@gmail.com. Check out other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!

With the recent completion of the 3rd installment of the Hulkageddon last month, @CyberinEVE, author of Hands Off, My Loots!,  asks: “Griefing is a very big part of EVE.  Ninja Salvaging, Suicide  Ganking, Trolling, and Scamming are all a very large part of the game.   What do you think about all these things?  You can talk about one, or  all…but just let us know your overall opinion on Griefing, and any  recommendations you may have to change it if you think it’s needed.”

Over the last month, as a member of the alliance formally known as Ushra’Khan (now Damu’Khonde), the effects of griefing have hit home in a big way. Specifically the art of subterfuge with the goal of alliance disbandment. Most players who have asked me about the internal effects have said they expected emoragequits and strife on multiple levels, but that just was not the case. Everyone was calm, collected, and operated like a cohesive unit to defend territory and assets. It’s all in a recent post if you want to read more about it.

That said, I do have a few things to say about the mechanics in-game that allow such things to happen. Not to prevent such things from happening again, for such security is the onus of the leadership of any organization, but to make such subterfuge more realistic.

Is it realistic to dismantle any business organization so completely with a simple press of a button? Highly unlikely. What kind of effort would it take to dismantle and IPO company? Let us use CCP itself as an example. To dismantle a company of such a size, relative to a large alliance, executives, officers and shareholders must all be notified and would most probably have to take a legally-binding vote on it. The legalities and red tape alone would take days if not weeks to get through.

Again, I am not against the prospect of industrial espionage and subterfuge, but it is quite unrealistic as it stands. Do we need it 100% realistic? No, i don’t believe so, but a few strides in that direction would certainly be welcome.

As for everything else in the topic, again I look at realism. Would the things above exist in such a form in the universe CCP is trying to create? Yes, therefore however people may love or hate them, I think those elements should remain as is.

Fly safe 😉
